Even when taken as directed, prescription opioids can lead to
heightened tolerance causing you to need to take more of the
medication for the same pain relief. The body's physical
dependence results in symptoms of withdrawal when the
medication is stopped. Withdrawal symptoms can include
increased sensitivity to pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dry
mouth, sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, depression, low
energy and strength, itching, and sweating.
Consuming too many opioids can stop a person's breathing
and can lead to death.
